Teak Furniture History

Caring for Teak Furniture in the Garden

Teak is beautiful, durable and practical. It can be left out in the weather without twisting or warping. And, as always, your teak patio furniture will never crack, splinter, or be a home to termites!

New furniture is made from several pieces of wood; the colors of these pieces do not match exactly. Color variations are normal. As our furniture ages and is exposed to the sun and the rain, the colors will soften and patina to a beautiful uniform silver gray. We recommend a natural finish as this is easily maintained and very practical.

To Grey?

Your outdoor teak furniture can be left outside to weather naturally. The integrity of teak is such that it can be left totally untreated and will slowly attain an elegant silver-gray patina color without significant deterioration. If, due to some environmental influences, the weathered surface becomes somewhat patchy, our customers have found that scrubbing with warm, soapy water or using diluted Marine Simple Green may even up the color. This cleaning process is made easier if the teak is wet beforehand, or after a night's rain.

Please be aware that after years of exposure to the natural elements, teak outdoor furniture takes on an appearance that is described as faintly weathered. This aged character suits any type of garden setting and is popular with many people because it is natural and virtually maintenance free. Remember, this in no way affects the integrity of the teak. This is why teak has been used for centuries for outdoor use and by shipbuilders.

Or Not To Grey?

If you prefer your furniture to retain its color, it is necessary to apply a finish that will prevent the weathering process. You can purchase a 'teak sealer' at your local marine store, as they are the experts in supplying teak finishes. Our customers find that sealer will last from 6-12 months depending on weather exposure and the environment. The teak sealer will need to be re-applied to maintain the natural color and finish. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions on all products and/or consult a marine expert. Teak is and has been the preferred wood to build luxury yachts all over the world.
